I read 3 extensive articles from the Tampa Tribune - December 4, 2010

Organism can grow on arsenic by:Associated Press

The article was about how scientists found a new bacteria that was observed to maintain growth even when crossed by arsenic. They described it as an "alien" substance because of how peculiar it was. What made it even more peculiar was that the bacteria used arsenic as nutrients, to help it grow.

Six major elements have been essential for life: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sufur. The peculiar bacteria is found in Mono Lake, California and the arsenic is substitue for  the phosphorus.

This article used the order of importance as the pattern of organization.  I found the article informative but the writing was very dry and repetitive.

City seeks Hixon Park tippling by: Christian M. Wade

The article was about how Curtis Hixon Park has been renovated and is now reopened. The author described it as nearly the same as it was before, just retouched because it was greatly needed. The new and only problem now is that the park isn't allowed to serve alcohol. Now the company that owns the park has to go to court to get a bill signed that states if they are allowed serve alcohol. The process will be complicated and prolonged. But the goal is to get it passed.

The article used order of importance as their organizational pattern. The article was not appealing to me at all. Perhaps, it was because I couldn't relate to the article. It was good writing that went into detail. However, I believe it could have been a little less dry.

Taste of winter staying another night by: Rob Shaw

The article was about how Floridians aren't so used to the the cold weather. We don't have cold weather too often so when it comes, it really hits us. In parts of Tampa, nights and mornings were getting as low as the 30s and is expected to be this way on and off. The high is only suppose to be about only 60 degrees. The National Weather Services in Ruskin stay that every couple of days there will be a cold front.

This story was very interesting. The writing was interesting to read. Perhaps, it was because, as a Floridian, I can relate to it myself. The article stated the most important facts first and then rambled and went further into details. Therefore, the pattern of organizaton used is order of improtance.

The spaceship is designed to take six passengers and two pilots on suborbital flights beyond earth's atmosphere in which they can look back on planet earth and out into the universe.

This article was boring to me.  The author's intent was to draw interest but it did not seem interesting to me.  The pattern of organizations was order of importance.

This is an full page advertisement for Robb and Stucky furniture store.  The are having a huge sale that includes items from 25% to 50%.  Everything is on sale in the store.  The store is located in Internationl Plaza Mall in Tampa.  They have a huge selection of brand name items and the sale lasts Monday through Saturday, 10am to 8pm and Sunday from noon to 6pm.

I read five articles for the September/October 2010 Issue of SPLASH Magazine.

#1  GETTING BACK ON FOCUS by Chelsey Walden Schreiner

The main topic of this article in the technique of swimming backstroke.
The most important thing to remember in swimming backstroke is to have
a strong under water kick, keep your head all the way back and using long
arm strokes.

The author's intent was to help swimmers have a better backstroke.  The pattern of
organization was cause and effect.

This article reinforced the proper techniques to use in a good solid backstroke.

#2  Caroline Burckle by Bonnie Moss

This article is about Caroline Burckle's experiences in swimming.  She made history when she
broke the 18 year old 500 Freestyle record in 2008.  After she broke this record, she decided to
quit swimming and did so for 8 months.

After her time off, she made the decision to go back to swimming but with a different coach and a
different team.  She also decided to change her college major to Fashion Product Development.

Currently, Caroline is training for the 2012 Olympics.  She is also a student and has sponsored her own charity called SurfAid International which assists with health care for those living in impoverished areas of the world.

The author's intent was to give introduce Caroline Burckle to the readership of Splash Magazine.
The pattern of organization used was order of importance.

This article improved by knowledge about Caroline Burckle and her achievements.

#3   Staying True by Garrett Weber-Gale

This article is about staying committed to your goals in swimming including diet, stretching, good rest,
working on stroke and maintaining shoulder strength.  The author suggests that eating well and working well in practice are very important parts of achieving your swimming goals.

The author's intent was to give first hand knowledge about how he achieved and continues to achieve his swimming goals.  The pattern of organization was classification.

This article reminded me of the importance of healthy eating and perseverance in my swimming goals.

#4   Sprinting for Charity by Mike Watkins

Nathan Adrian and seven of the fastest and most accomplished world sprinters will compete in the 50 meter freestyle at the Ocotber 16, 2010 Tiburon Sprint Classic.  This event benefits the USA Swimming Association and Hospice by the Bay.

This tournament event has created a lot of enthusiasm and interest among swimming enthusiasts as well as supports of Hospice.

The article highlights three of the swimmers who will compete: Ryan Lochte, Ben Wildman-Tobriner, and Matt Grevers.

This intent of this article to introduce the Tiburon Sprint Classic and the several of the swimmers that will compete in the event.  The pattern or organization was to compare and contrast the three featured swimmers and what they each bring to the event.

My reaction to this article was that the title did not adequately portray the true intent of the article because I thought the article would be more about who the event benefits and less about the swimmers who were to compete.

#5  Profile of a Sprinter by Tom Slear

This article is about Jason Lezak who is a competitive freestyle sprinter.  The article explains that Jason's focus has always been on sprinting events which include the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.  His endurance was so poor that he always complained to his coaches that a 500 freestyle was too long of a warm-up.  Over time, his coaches worked with Jason to convince him that training through distance sets would help him in his sprinting events.  This article highlights the drive and personality of sprinters and how they differ from swimmers who swimmer longer events.

The author's intent was to compare the characteristics of sprinters versus non sprinters.  The pattern of organization was compare and contrast.

This article reconfirmed and added to my knowledge of sprinters versus non sprinters.

Five Reading Selections from Splash Magazine:

Mark Gangloff
by: Bonnie Moss

Summary:
This article was about the two time Olympic gold medalist, Mark Gangloff. He is now 28 years old and is comparing the differences of swimming at his current age to the times he swam before and during college. His practices now consist of less yards. Though that is so, he is still training for the 2012 Olympics. Gangloff's best stroke is breast stroke and he is perhaps the best in the world in the 100, 200 breaststroke. He describes how swimming has such an impact on his life and how much he enjoys it.

Personal reaction:
My personal reaction was that Mark Gangloff is really talented to be swimming for so long and still remaining consistent in speed.

Notes I would Use:
I would use a thought bubble because it lets me be creative in my own thoughts and opinions about this subject.

Summer Session: 10 Things about Big Summer Meets to Ponder
by: Casey Barret

Summary:
This article describes ten different big meet senarios to give examples of what it is like to swim in big summer meets. These meets can be competitive, nerve-racking, contain new qualifiers to contend with, increased exposure for swimming and media attention. All of these qualities makes swimming in national summer swim meets a challenge.

Personal Reaction:
My personal reaction of this article was that I felt the article was true. From personal experience, I know that big swim meets can be mindblowing. The pressure is intense.

Notes I would Use:
I would use a web because it's easy to local all the goals and events you need to focus on.

This article was about four Olympic medalist swimmers who are fighting for their causes. Cullen Jones is open about supporting a foundation to raise awareness about child drowning. Cullen, almost drowned once so that makes him very passionate about the cause he's fighting for.

Beard, a mother herself,  is a focused on healthier school meal choices.  Weber-Gale, comes from Texas which is one of America's most obese states. He is the founder of Athleticfoodie, a health buisness.

Sprint Freestyle
by Chelsey Walden Schreiner

Summary:
This article was about sprinting freestyle. It talked about Coach Adam Mania who coaches Schroeder YMCA swim team in Brown Dear, Wisconsin. He describes drills that he makes his swimmers do to practice sprinting. There is a drill called 'quarter-quarter-quarter-quarter drill". That is when you begin in streamline position and have a heavy kick, then add arms, then streamline position with an all out kick, then lastly swim the final quarter. Practicing this repeatedly will get you prepared to sprint well in sprint races in an official swim meets.

Personal Reaction:
My personal reaction to this article was that how I can relate to drills and practices. From personal experience, I recognize improvements in my swimming from performing my coaches drills.

Notes I would Use:
I would use a list because there are different examples of drills listed in the articles.

Tuck to Streamlines
by Michael Mejia

Summary:
This article is about teaching you how to improve your streamline and flipturns. It tells you the ways to exercise your core so you can improve those techniques. You have to sit on an exercise mat and balance your buttocks. You crunch up together, arms grabbing your legs. You want to do this in a slow, controlled movement so you can exercise you abdomens correctly.

Personal Reaction:
My personal reaction to this article was that it's making me debate to perform these exercises and discuss them with my coach.

Notes I would Use:
The notes I would use is, again a list, because it chronologically lists steps to follow.

1.03 Materials and Free Choice

WHAT KIND OF READER ARE YOU?

I took the quiz for assessment 1.03. It determined that I am a fiction reader. I completely agree with this result because I'm interested in stories with feasable concepts. I like reading about people's issues that could perhaps relate to mine.

WHAT WAS THE LAST THING YOU READ THAT YOU ENJOYED AND WHY?
The last thing I read and enjoyed was most likely a Facebook.com status comment. The comment read "Congrats for winning the event! You did very well and made your team proud." The comment made me feel very proud and accomplished. I don't get compliments about swimming that often so it made me smile and laugh.
